When ketuba didn't wow, bride created her own

Tsilli Pines couldn't find a ketubah that she and her fiance liked. The Jewish wedding contract is often artfully handwritten and later framed as a wall decoration. But Pines, 33, a Portland, Ore.-based graphic designer, wanted something modern and simple. So she designed her own ketubah -- and then one for a friend.

"I started thinking that other people might also be drawn to what I was doing," she said.

Pines researched the historical precedent of the form and was attracted to the asymmetrical designs from Iran, which were very much in the spirit of modern graphic design.

"A lot of the early, native ketubot were incredible, too -- they were more bold than ornate, and I found that beautiful," she said.

Having grown up in Northern California, she found the simplicity of Japanese design a big influence: "I've looked at an enormous amount of material in the course of studying and practicing design, and I'm sure a lot of that makes its way into my work."

Pines is creating ketubot that feature trees or flowers or birds or moons under the name New Ketubah.

The runway for a bridal fashion show was set up in the back half of the room.Debbie Flikkema and Leanne Moss, of Churchill, came to the Bridal Affaire 2008 "to get ideas" for their daughters, both of whom are getting married soon and live in other states. Many others were there for similar reasons, and they strolled through the mall in search of ideas for cakes, flowers, food, decorating, gowns and tuxedos.

How did you get engaged: Readers tell their stories

We asked our readers share their stories. We got so many great stories, that we can't fit them all in this space. More stories can be found online at www.thedailystar.com.

Some of the proposals were simple expressions of love, and others were complex paths to the final question. Some were spur-of-the-moment decisions, many others involved much planning and many people involved.

All are special to the couples involved.

Here are their stories:

I was on vacation in Paris with a girlfriend, having lunch, when the waiter sent over a rose. "From the gentleman," he said. Only there was no one in sight except for a couple and an elderly man. Next came a bottle of champagne, again, a gift from "the gentleman." We couldn't figure it out _ who could be sending these presents? Next thing you know, my boyfriend tapped me on the shoulder, dropped to his knees and presented the ring.

Busty Brides are Going Strapless with New Bra

Snares of Venus makes new strapless bras for women with larger cup sizes.

Bakersfield, CA (PRWEB) February 7, 2008 -- Custom bra and Corset Company Snares of Venus have launched a new strapless bra and it is changing the way busty brides shop for their wedding dresses. Strapless gowns are now on the list girls.

With popular wedding dress styles like off the shoulder, deep plunging necklines and of course strapless dresses, many women with a cup size of DD and up often relinquished their favorite designs because they were unable to secure the proper undergarments to support the style of the dress.

Not anymore.

Made of cotton, satin or silk charmeuse, the new Snares of Venus Strapless bra provides a good lift and excellent support for bra sizes up to a T, yes T (20" between the ribcage and the bustline).

Bridesmaids revisited: Etiquette for wedding party focuses on ...

They made the pact when they were children, long before there was a proposal and a ring.

Since she was a young girl, Laura Stanger has known that when her older sister got married, she would be the maid of honor.

But that did not stop the 21-year-old Red Bank woman from being completely at her sister's service.

"I called her almost every day," Ms. Stanger said. "I would go to appointments with her."

Ms. Stanger helped plan the bridal shower, rehearsed her reception toast and, on the big day six months ago, held her sister's flowers and passed her the bridegroom's ring at the right moment in the ceremony.

"I really wasn't even worried about how I felt or how I looked," she said. "I was more worried about her."

When couples get married, they often ask close friends or relatives to participate in the wedding party.
